I get why many rushed to defend the Okra CEO/founder. As Iyin of Future Africa wrote on LinkedIn, the schadenfreude is predictable. But, we do the ecosystem a disservice if in protecting the founder we don’t point out the obvious: the comms around the shut-down was terrible. 1/

As a publicist, it pained me to see this b/c it was *entirely* preventable. A LinkedIn post or exclusive given to a trusted reporter would have allowed her to explain why she shut the business and clarify the discrepancy in the funding figures. 2/

She would have controlled the narrative and fended off most speculation. All that said, trying to build a startup in Nigeria (especially now given the economy) AND in a new industry (open banking) is damn tough. I tip my hat to her for knowing when to throw in the towel. 3/
