Human kindness can significantly reduce the distress associated with #delirium. Eye contact, gentle words, reassurance, explanation of context - simple and quick to do, and very effective in improving the experience of the delirious patient. Build this into every interaction.

Skilled nursing care is obviously at the heart of excellent #delirium care. Isn't it odd that many nursing degrees hardly cover #delirium?

"I was convinced the nurses were plotting against me. I know now that they were trying to help, but at the time, I was really terrified and not my usual self. I now still feel really ashamed about the way I behaved." - 80 year old post-operative patient #delirium

We've designed healthcare systems around physical illness, yet #delirium reminds us that the mind and body are inseparable. What might truly integrated care look like?

⚠️ Myth: If a patient knows both their name and their date of birth, they are not delirious. ✅ Fact: People with #delirium can often correctly answer simple orientation questions. Use onset/fluctuation, & altered alertness, & other sources to come to a diagnosis.

Let's talk intraop ketamine and postop delirium • At low doses (≤ 0.35 mg/kg), there was a lower incidence of postop delirium compared with patients who had not received ketamine. • No association was observed at higher doses (> 0.35 mg/kg). #anaesthesia #MedTwitter

A feeling of loneliness or isolation is commonly reported in people experiencing #delirium. Don't leave them feeling like this. Speak kindly, explain what is happening, involve family.
