Tips on the FAST exam: RUQ- don't bury your hand to the bed with your palm up. Scan more anterior. Hold the probe like you would write with a pen. The liver is a nice large organ allowing you to scan anterior and get beautiful pictures!

More RUQ tips for the FAST. If you are seeing the liver only and not the kidney, fan the probe down towards the bed. BAM! There is your Morisons Pouch! Want to see the tip of the liver better? Slide down towards the patient's toes. Stay in the same plane...just slide down.

Tips on the FAST-LUQ Scan up higher than you think! On a female it will be "bra strap level". Go very posterior. If you are only seeing part of the spleen turn the indicator towards 2:00 (clockwise) and it will open up that spleen. If you are not seeing the left kidney, fan down.

More tips on FAST-LUQ If you are trying to see the diaphragm better slide up towards the head. If the pt can take a breath in ask them to take a 'small' breath in. A 'big' breath will pull the lung down and it will be like a curtain-you will see nothing
