Last Saturday was Darwin's & Wallace's Night at Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, and the #INCSTEP project couldn't miss out! 🙌 Visitors were taught how to identify Iberian #Xylocopa species, informed about the project's aims and warned about the importance of NHCs for pollinator conservation 🐝🛡️🏛️

Today we meet Leopoldo Castro! 🐝 He is a former secondary school teacher, expert in several Hymenoptera taxa (e.g. Bombinae, Eumeninae), focused on faunistic, geographical and taxonomic studies 👨🏻‍🏫🏫 His main task for #INCSTEP is the revision of #Bombus specimens! 🔬

I: How do you think collections contribute to conservation and biodiversity? R: "NHCs are essential for the study of the Iberian entomofauna; they also 'train' entomologists, who can learn from previous IDs, improving taxonomic knowledge beyond distributional approaches." 🧑‍🏫

I: What are the main challenges for these collections? R: "I think NHCs face three dilemmas: having enough space, preserving material and providing access to specialists who want to study it. All three depend on the continuity of an adequate budget: 'the' main challenge." 💸

I: How do you think collections contribute to conservation and biodiversity? MG: “NHCs provide key data on specimens over long time spans, allowing us to observe, for example, spatio-temporal changes on their distribution and morphology. Also, they are key teaching resources!”

I: What are the main challenges for these collections? MG: “One of the greatest challenges of NHCs is the shortage of personnel. Added to this, there are other conservation issues such as the lack of space and storing conditions, essential to avoid deterioration and pests.”

I: What are the main challenges for collections? OA: "Taxonomy and collections need funding and recognition to attract researchers. Without support, experts will move to better-paying fields. Preserving collections is as crucial as conserving forests—they hold vital knowledge".
