In the environment, plastic gradually breaks down to produce ever-smaller microplastics - defined as less than 5mm in size and insoluble in water. Microplastics can be eaten by and cause stress to a wide variety of organisms that are vital parts of food webs. #WorldOceansDay

Counting microplastics in water and sediments is challenging. Through ongoing collaborative work, UEA Microplastics Lab has developed a cheap and quick analysis kit to measure and map microplastic pollution across a range of ecosystems. #WorldOceansDay youtu.be/4MyIqKSewio
