Not to miss! Always a pleasure to hear what Dr Emily BurdfieldSteel has to say about how chemicals shape some animal interactions! 🐥🦋🐛

Hot off the press! Extrapolating from chemical data to predator response is far from straightforward - still @CrisOttocento Anne Winters Bibiana Rojas @JohannaMappes and I found evidence of variation in the level of chemical defense in the wood tiger moth! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/je…

In chemical defences, more is not always better. We look at the geographic variation and non-additive effects of pyrazines in the chemical defence of an aposematic moth #openaccess @CrisOttocento @DrAnneWintersm @JohannaMappes Bibiana Rojas Dr Emily BurdfieldSteel ow.ly/g7hi50MmShu

New paper Current Biology Orchid bees are best known for their perfume concocting behavior. Males acquire volatile compounds from the environment to use in courtship. However, the function of these chemical bouquets has remained unknown, until now! cell.com/current-biolog… 🧵

Beyond happy to share that I will be starting a new position as an Assistant Professor at Amsterdam Institute for Life and Environment Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (inactief) this fall! My lab will be recruiting soon, so please reach out if symbiosis, chemical ecology & fungal genomics strike your fancy!

Our review on "The evolution and ecology of multiple antipredator defences" is out now! This paper stems from a symposium sponsored by ESEB during the pandemic, and is out now (Journal of Evolutionary Biology) thanks to the tireless leadership of David Kikuchi & Alice Exnerova doi.org/10.1111/jeb.14… #OA

Another shoutout to this fab review stemming from an ESEB symposium: The authors ask: Why be multiply nasty? 🤔 David Kikuchi David Kikuchi Bibiana Rojas Dr Emily BurdfieldSteel Kevin Arbuckle @krushnamegh Iliana Medina @MarieHerberstei Rose Thorogood Anne Winters 👉ow.ly/E6cV50P0KNk

Today's cover of ProcB - Signal detectability and boldness are not the same: the function of defensive coloration in nudibranchs is distance-dependent. With Karen Cheney & J. Endler UQ Science Queensland Brain Institute, UQ Visual Ecology UQ Ecology of Vision micaToolbox #colsci shorturl.at/qSV38

A new paper from our Amata moth project is now out Behavioral Ecology! We did predation trials with noisy miners and found that birds used abdominal stripes of the moths as a primary warning signal, which could relax selection on consistent wing patterns #colsci academic.oup.com/beheco/advance…

Thrilled to see this work published in Ecology and Evolution with Nerida Wilson. We derive divergence rates for chromodorids and we describe Chromolaichma hemera sp. nov. from the western Atlantic & Caribbean. This is just the tip of the iceberg- watch this space! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ec…

Two-year postdoc position open in my Suomen Akatemia | Research Council of Finland funded project investigating the role of the predator gut microbiome in interactions between avian predators and chemically defended prey: ats.talentadore.com/apply/postdoct… Please RT!
