Behold the fancy wing feathers of the male great argus 👇 The shading on the ocelli ('eyespots') creates the illusion of 3D spheres to humans, but do female birds think the same? We asked some chickens...and it seems so! bit.ly/3Ui3n5k

Hot off the press! Extrapolating from chemical data to predator response is far from straightforward - still @CrisOttocento Anne Winters Bibiana Rojas @JohannaMappes and I found evidence of variation in the level of chemical defense in the wood tiger moth! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/je…

In chemical defences, more is not always better. We look at the geographic variation and non-additive effects of pyrazines in the chemical defence of an aposematic moth #openaccess @CrisOttocento @DrAnneWintersm @JohannaMappes Bibiana Rojas Dr Emily BurdfieldSteel ow.ly/g7hi50MmShu

New paper Current Biology Orchid bees are best known for their perfume concocting behavior. Males acquire volatile compounds from the environment to use in courtship. However, the function of these chemical bouquets has remained unknown, until now! cell.com/current-biolog… 🧵

Beyond happy to share that I will be starting a new position as an Assistant Professor at Amsterdam Institute for Life and Environment Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (inactief) this fall! My lab will be recruiting soon, so please reach out if symbiosis, chemical ecology & fungal genomics strike your fancy!

Our review on "The evolution and ecology of multiple antipredator defences" is out now! This paper stems from a symposium sponsored by ESEB during the pandemic, and is out now (Journal of Evolutionary Biology) thanks to the tireless leadership of David Kikuchi & Alice Exnerova doi.org/10.1111/jeb.14… #OA

A new paper from our Amata moth project is now out Behavioral Ecology! We did predation trials with noisy miners and found that birds used abdominal stripes of the moths as a primary warning signal, which could relax selection on consistent wing patterns #colsci academic.oup.com/beheco/advance…

Thrilled to see this work published in Ecology and Evolution with Nerida Wilson. We derive divergence rates for chromodorids and we describe Chromolaichma hemera sp. nov. from the western Atlantic & Caribbean. This is just the tip of the iceberg- watch this space! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ec…
