Fascinating study on Imposter Syndrome among surgical trainees. Note that self-reported "imposterism" was VERY prevalent among trainees regardless of ABSITE/USMLE scores, PGY level, gender or race. Is it the people we train, or how we train them? journalacs.org/article/S1072-…

The people who you teach in your professional life, are observing how you conduct yourself in your personal life. Ahmed Khouqeer reminded me of that today, when I ran into him during my am run. It’s a high calling to teach. This responsibility is not limited to work. BCM_Surgery

Please read this brief narrative of a neurosurgical trainee who was reprimanded for her attire. What happens is unfair, I'm sure you will agree. However, if you take comfort, because the truth came to light, you are missing the point. The damage is done in so many ways.

Physicians are the natural attorneys of the poor and the social problems should largely be solved by them... This is one of my favorite quotes. It perfectly encapsulates how I feel about my job. Got to share my experiences with racial profiling and overpolicing as part of our 1/3

We wore orange today at The Ben Taub and LBJ trauma centers in Houston for National Gun Violence Awareness Day. The men and women in these photos are acutely aware of the prevalence and impact of violence due to firearms. Cedric Dark, MD, MPH, FACEP R. Mario Vera BCM_Surgery

Thanks Ted Oberg for sharing this “dollars and cents” perspective on gun violence. In addition to pain, suffering, and death, it’s yet another reason to study this uniquely American epidemic, which is particularly severe in our local Houston community.

For #Hirschsprung disease, the Soave or endorectal pull-through was described in 1964. Yancey described the same technique in 1952 but because of his race was published in a less read journal. The procedure is now being renamed the Yancey-Soave to give proper historical credit.

#TQIP2022 was a a great reunion with wonderful friends and colleagues from trauma centers past and present, and a great reminder of what a privilege it is to care for the injured. And Phoenix is pretty cool (in December)

It was my pleasure to participate in the meeting. The energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the exemplary care of all injured patients was palpable!

I just witnessed history… Todd Rosengart, MD hosting surgical jeopardy for BCM_Surgery as our trainees prepare for the ABSITE. This was the first year that the faculty team has ever won! Thanks BCM General Surgery Residency for finally letting us win…

Racism is difficult to define. Systemic racism goes unnoticed. If we are to move forward to a more inclusive profession we must work to understand and recognize the racism that lies deep in our foundations. Pictures speak 1000 words. #STS2023

1/2 How many surgical professional associations have elections from the membership? I know one that does — Assoc4AcademicSurgery — elected officers shown below. It’s time to move in this direction to ensure leadership reflects the values of membership.

This took some bravery to publish this statement. Thank-you But the fact that this statement is needed, is evidence of the work that needs to be done. Be as brave and transparent with being "committed to learning from this experience and taking action" bit.ly/3H3E1CV

It was an honor to give the Mattox lecture with @Kmattox1 in the front row. Thank you Todd Rosengart, MD Martin D. Zielinski BCM_Surgery for the amazing hospitality. Spending the day with @Kmattox1 and getting a tour of Ben Taub by the legend himself was priceless

I cannot describe what a treat it was to watch my current surgical trainees and colleagues learn from the man who taught me so many valuable lessons in surgery and life.
