What does the 10 Year Health Plan mean for clinical radiology? There is a lot to unpick but it’s hard to get a full picture of what it means with so little detail on implementation plans.

REMINDER: Have tweeted a lot about this previously. But when PAY is DOWN, PENSION linked to that pay is also DOWN. So you *cant* fix this by robbing Peter (pension) to pay Paul (pay). You are both Peter and Paul so you cant rob your future self to fund pay rises. *Not* fair

I can explain the divide. Since Doctors trained & became Consultants or GPs in the 20th century - the “deal” has progressively got worse. • Medical students stopped getting maintenance grants. • Then they had to pay tuition fees - which have risen sharply over 20 years. •

To ensure safe, effective care, new practice boundaries are proposed for PAs: • No undifferentiated patients • Minimum 2 years in secondary care before primary care or mental health trusts • No requests for ionising radiation • Initial roles reflect defined job descriptions

Thank you Wes, this is progress. Im sure it wont pacify all voices on this (you never can), but there are very many important concessions i.e. name (assistants) & appearance, and major restrictions on seeing undifferentiated patients. I know you want less top down control from

Statement from The Royal College of Radiologists following The Leng review - No role for PAs in Diagnostic Radiology. - There may be a limited, tightly defined role for PAs to support doctors working in Interventional Radiology. - PAs should not be requesting any clinical imaging investigations.

Professor Gillian Leng, President of the Royal Society of Medicine agrees: doctors are right to be angry. Paid nearly £10,000 less than physician assistants; despite more training, responsibility, and risk. This is how the NHS treats its doctors. thetimes.com/uk/healthcare/…
