Every time I hear lamentations about the death of the post-1945 Liberal International Order (at the hands of the Russians and the Chinese), I am reminded of Paul Chamberlin's book, The Cold War's Killing Fields. Here's a useful passage from the book.

After ten days together in China, my @penn students are on their way back home. I could not possibly be more proud of how they conducted themselves on this trip, representing the best of American values at every stop. One of the most inspirational things I’ve seen in my lifetime.

This piece by Komiya-sensei is worth your time. I wrote on it in my dissertation, but the relationship between Kishi and Emperor Hirohito is a particularly interesting one. Both Kishi and Hirohito viewed communism as the existential threat to Japan’s postwar order.

Each year, the centerpiece of our Penn Project on the Future of U.S.-China Relations fellows’ visit to Beijing is a 2 day workshop at CISS Tsinghua. This year’s discussions were simply outstanding. Many thanks again to my friend DA Wei @Tsinghua 达巍 for hosting us, and also this year to Prof. Wang Jisi for his keynote remarks
