Today marks the day when the U.S. FDA is officially now overdue in issuing final regs for OTC hearing aids that were legislatively mandated by a bipartisan act championed by Elizabeth Warren and Chuck Grassley, signed into law by Trump in 2017, & spurred on by a Biden exec order in 2021

Note: White House OMB successfully concluded their review despite the last minute antics of organizations trying to schedule meetings with them to gaslight about issues called out in the report from Elizabeth Warren & Chuck Grassley warren.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/…

Huge thank you to Nattawan Utoomprurkporn,MD,MSc,PhD and Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn U. for advancing the shared vision of hearing health for all. JHU Cochlear Center for Hearing and Public Health Frank R. Lin, MD PhD Jennifer Anne Deal Nicholas S Reed

Check out Nicholas S Reed on World News Tonight describing the significance and impact of OTC hearing aid for the tens of millions of Americans who stand to benefit!! It was 2:30am in Bangkok when Nick had to record this! youtu.be/oEBfmV9PrDM

I've never been keen to accept invitations to write an academic book on hearing loss mainly because no one would read it. Partnering with my friend & colleague, Nicholas S Reed, and AARP to write a For Dummies book on hearing loss, though, is an entirely different matter!!

We were able to help get this across the finish line through the extraordinary bipartisan efforts of Elizabeth Warren, Chuck Grassley and President Donald J. Trump. Updating Medicare regs to complement the availability of innovative OTC hearing aids is next on the list!

Thanks for inviting me, Kerri Haresign! Thrilled to be collaborating again with Consumer Tech Association to advance OTC hearing aids and the hearingnumber.org initiative from JHU Cochlear Center for Hearing and Public Health

Thrilled and honored that we’ll be hosting KR Liu (she/her) from Google tomorrow for our monthly JHU Cochlear Center for Hearing and Public Health seminar! It’s not too late to register!

Hearing significantly improved for older adults who received low-cost hearing devices from community health worker program. Johns Hopkins OHNS Carrie Nieman, MD MPH Frank R. Lin, MD PhD @JAMA_Current hopkinsmedicine.org/news/newsroom/… via Hopkins Med News

It’s hard for me to believe that this study first began when Carrie Nieman, MD MPH began working with me as a resident. Seven years later, Carrie and her team have seen this project through to completion with the first hearing loss RCT ever published in JAMA in its 139 year history!
