Problematic eating behaviors & cognitions (e.g. weight & shape concerns) are associated w/ BMI at various timepoints post-bariatric surgery, highlighting the importance of ongoing assessment & early intervention.Fantastic presentation by my colleague, Leslie Heinberg PhD 👏 #asmbs2022

Very informative talk by Dr. Kasey Goodpaster on clinical considerations of cannabis use in bariatric surgery. More research & discussion is needed in this area to provide the best care for our patients. Thank you for presenting & sharing this information! #asmbs2022

Helpful and engaging talk by Beth Czerwony sharing her experience co-hosting virtual support groups with Dr. Nini Peterson at Cleveland Clinic. They call it “food for thought.” Beth (the RD) is the food, and Nini (the psychologist) is the thought 😁🍎💭 #asmbs2022

A patient in my binge eating group shared this song and I love it so much. We need to look at harmful media & corporate influences in the development of poor body image with a critical eye, and learn to reject those messages. #bodyimage #eatingdisorders youtube.com/watch?v=W7FbyU…

Pre-op bariatric pt:"I learned so much about my health through this process.Learning I had OSA &getting a CPAP changed my life. I thank your team for that"👏 ➡️One of the benefits of the pre-op process is the thorough multidisciplinary work-up that pts may not have had otherwise.

Dr. Gail Kerver sharing about high rates of objective overeating episodes, particularly past 8pm, among pre-surgical bariatric patients. This is an important area of education and treatment even if pts are not meeting full criteria for binge eating disorder. #ASMBS2023

Rachel Tran shared that approximately half of bariatric pts are taking psychotropic meds. Depression & psychotropic med use are both risk factors for obesity. Men on psychotropics lost less weight after surgery than those not on these meds. #ASMBS2023

Dr. Karen Grothe had many pearls of wisdom when giving the psychological perspective on weight reoccurrence. It’s vital to have a non-judgemental stance so pts feel comfortable coming in for help: “The time you least want to see us is the time we most want to see you.” #ASMBS2023

Beth Czerwony Rd talking about nutritional considerations for pts w/ weight reoccurrence. When pts are already struggling w/ adherence after their index surgery, make sure those issues (especially vitamins!) are being addressed, & also help identify non-scale goals. #ASMBS2023

Loved hearing the revision patient perspective from Amber Huett-Garcia. She reminded us & the “biggest threat to care is bias” and “don’t assume it’s a knowledge gap” when pts experience weight reoccurrence. Therapy is so helpful in helping pts to overcome internal barriers. #ASMBS2023

Thank you, Leslie Heinberg PhD for doing all the legwork of researching these psychological testing measures! Measures that include validity/response style scales are particularly useful in this population. #ASMBS2023

Phenomenal presentation on self-compassion by my talented colleague Dr. Emily Fink. Self-compassion is a protective factor against emotional eating, helps pts get back on track after slips, and can also help us as providers avoid burnout 🧘‍♀️💗 #ASMBS2023
