Really pleased - the right outcome and brings Royal College of General Practitioners in line with The BMA and other major Royal Colleges 👏

A sensible, pragmatic decision that follows the BMA & all other medical Royal Colleges. This allows them to engage fairly & constructively as legalisation comes closer. Recognises that ultimately this is a matter for society; most of all for dying ppl who want & need this choice.

Let me explain. Half of those who voted wanted to RCGP to oppose and the other half wanted it to drop its opposition. The only way to represent that spread is with neutrality, Basic logic

Dear Katherine - how much suffering at the end of life are we prepared to tolerate as a society? Because you know it happens each and every day

This reminds me of doctor priest who did not agree with assisted dying but said - who am I to put my beliefs before the needs of my dying patients? Apparently large blocks of palliative docs are prepared to do just that

I’m sure individual doctors in those institutions will be able to exercise their right to conscientious objection. I’m sure you know that there are palliative care docs who agree with AD but daren’t say so When will the PC community admit this?

And really, what is a disaster is Those who suffer without possibility of relief Those who take their own lives under these circumstances Those forced to go abroad for an assisted death That’s the real disaster

Sorry to see an organisation that purports to look after the interests of women not consider the women who suffer unavoidably at the end of life/take their own lives under these circumstances/go to Dignitas. We are talking hundreds/thousands. Where is your compassion for them?

I have spoken at length to the prof of pharmacology who set up the drug regime. its the same all over Australia, no-one has ever woken up, no complications I’ll take his word for it

Because I’ve had a lot of conversations with people who work in the system.

Dear Kevin Yuill - what you never address is what you are offering to those who suffer at the end of life. And we all know that not all suffering can be relieved So along with all the whataboutery ,what are you offering those terminally ill people? Frankly - nothing at all

Dear Kevin Yuill and Dan Hitchens - over 300 million people have access to assisted dying in numerous jurisdictions and more are looking at legislation. No one has reversed their assisted dying law. Are you really saying the UK can’t make this work?

Hi Rachel - Do you know 300 million people have access to assisted dying around the world. Do you really think we cant set up a system ourselves Do you know this is the most scrutinised bill in any jurisdiction What are you offering those who can’t be helped by palliative care?

Have you talked to doctors in Australia? I have . The only coercion they report is families stopping their loved ones having an assisted death. Please listen to those who are already involved. They dont bear out your concerns. Please stop scaremongering, you’re better than that

And I consider the RCPsych to have a neutral position until they re engage with their members. Perhaps you havent seen the letter from senior members of the college disagreeing with the Pres and calling the bill safe, workable and compassionate? Perhaps you’d like to apologise?
