The serum small non-coding RNA (SncRNA) landscape as a molecular biomarker of age associated muscle dysregulation & insulin resistance in older adults: our MRCLEC NIHR Southampton BRC data from Dr Mark Burton point to new interventions to promote healthy ageing MyAge national research network

Thanks to the amazing team from Southampton Medicine and MRCLEC at University of Southampton science and engineering festival #SOTSEF for a great day measuring grip strength and demonstrating how diet/exercise influences muscle health via epigenetics. There were many interesting discussions.

Great to have our recent sncRNA work mentioned in the new UK Ageing Network newsletter. The UKAN of which MyAge national research network is a component has been instrumental in bringing together researchers from across the UK and supporting ECRs.

Great conference today held by FortisNet. Lots of great speakers and opportunity to spark up new collaborations with industry partners. MyAge national research network NIHR Southampton BRC

Great day at the University of Southampton BiOmics conference. Lots of ideas linked to big data and analysis 🧐 Southampton Medicine NIHR Southampton BRC

Representing the Postdoctoral Association (PDA) at the Southampton Faculty of Medicine conference. The PDA is there to support early career researchers with career development and funding. If you need support contact your school reps for a chat. Southampton Medicine Delphine Boche

Honoured to have been awarded the Academy of Medical Sciences Research Prize for our paper @https://faseb.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1096/fj.202301089RR and present it at the Faculty of Medicine Research Conference Southampton Medicine @karenalillycrop Keith Godfrey, MBE

Excellent day at the BRC open day a few weeks ago. Lots of excellent presentations and grateful for the opportunity to present our recently published research on sarcopenia. Also for a peak inside Southampton FC stadium. NIHR Southampton BRC

Our research is helping people stay healthier for longer. Dr Mark Burton has been awarded a one-year National Institute for Health and Care Research BRC Postdoctoral Bridging Fellowship to help improve muscle health in older age. Mitochondrial calcium uptake declines during aging and is directly act... sciencedirect.com/science/articl… Great to see our work published in Cell Metabolism as part of a super collaboration with Umberto DeMarchi FeigeLab Keith Godfrey, MBE Gaia Gherardi Emma Garratt and all involved.

Great to be part of the UK-North American Ageing Research Consortium meeting at the Wellcome Collection London representing MyAge national research network and Uni Southampton. Some stimulating talks and nice to catch up with everyone.

Fantastic presentation from Professor Eleanor Stride for our Southampton Medicine Christmas lecture organised by the Postdoctoral Association. Well done to the winners of the Dean’s awards across the categories. University of Southampton Delphine Boche

If any Southampton Medicine ECRs in the schools of CES and Cancer Sciences are interested in representing the Postdoctoral Association then please get in contact.

Weakening of muscles is a major public health challenge. Insights from an international study, involving University of Southampton’s Keith Godfrey, MBE, Emma Garratt and Dr Mark Burton, suggest a molecule in olive leaves could boost muscle health in older age. 🔗 research.uhs.nhs.uk/news/olive-lea…

Southampton’s Dr Mark Burton is improving understanding of muscle loss in later life at NIHR Southampton BRC and Southampton Medicine. He has now secured a prestigious fellowship to support his transition to a permanent position within academia 👏 Read more: research.uhs.nhs.uk/news/fellowshi…
