I'll say it again, as crazy as it seems given today's context, we need to be thinking about teacher layoffs in the not too distant future. (1/2) NCTQ Blog: Teacher layoffs may be coming. How do districts decide who to let go? nctq.org/blog/Teacher-l…

According to Adam Looney at The Brookings Institution, there's a *small* problem with Biden's new student loan plan: "The Department of Education doesn’t know what its new income-driven plan for student loans will cost or who will benefit." Whoops! brookings.edu/opinions/the-d…

Yes, teachers should be paid more, but there are better ways to raise wages and promote access to quality teaching than a $60K minimum salary. My two cents below. Ways to reform teacher compensation, beyond a $60,000 minimum salary brookings.edu/blog/brown-cen… via The Brookings Institution

The problem isn’t *just* about money, says Mike Hansen. Teachers often identify working conditions, leadership, and culture as primary reasons for dissatisfaction and departure. brookings.edu/blog/brown-cen…

I’m proud to announce a new brief on gender pay differences among teachers with coauthors Diana Quintero & Nicolas Zerbino. We find school-based pay favors men across all income types (its not just coaching, though coaching is a part of it). Read here: brookings.edu/research/gende…

Male coaches & sponsors are more likely to be paid more than female coaches & sponsors even when reporting hours were accounted for, indicating the supply of labor does not explain the earnings gap. 📙 Full policy brief on the gender wage gap in teaching: brookings.edu/research/gende…

We don’t have a global shortage of teacher talent, but a local one. A global minimum salary provides little reason to expect that any of these local issues would be adequately addressed, argues Mike Hansen. brookings.edu/blog/brown-cen…

One troubling implication of this paper. If 90%tile+ parents (parents of high achievers) decide open public schools offer no benefit to their children, they will seek alternatives. Those with $$$ will have more options than those without.

I'm super excited to hear the recent announcement of our new incoming Brookings president with deep experience with education policy. She'll be a great asset to the Brookings community, and I look especially forward to the opportunity to work together on education issues.

I love good social science that looks at the intersection of religious practice and social behaviors. This paper is like an early birthday gift.

Everyone might know about the enrollment declines in big cities like LA, NYC, or Chicago. But those were more widespread than I anticipated. I found that 35 states and more than 2/3 districts were serving fewer students than they did pre-pandemic: the74million.org/article/with-m…

Educators face the challenge of quantity and quality in the teaching workforce. High-need schools address turnover with bonuses/scholarships. Generous service scholarships can boost both quality and quantity, fortifying the workforce, says Mike Hansen. hoover.org/research/strat…
