Such a privilege to have seen the bronze portrait head of the Thracian king Seuthes III, discovered in 2004 in the Golyama Kosmatka tumulus in Bulgaria. It was ripped from the body of a statue, no trace of which was found in the tumulus. #archaeology. 1/ ca. 310-300 BCE 📸 me

#EpigraphyTuesday! The sarcophagus of Arnegunde, wife of the merovingian king Clotaire I (511-561) was discovered in the Basilica of Saint-Denis in 1959. A ring found on the skeleton's thumb bears the inscription ARNEGUNDIS, encircling a central monogram... 🧵1/2 📷 me

Bryn Celli Ddu is a remarkable Neolithic passage grave built some 5,000 years ago to align with midsummer sunrise. The rising sun on the longest day of the year lights up the inner burial chamber, where a stone pillar keeps watch from the shadows. Anglesey, Wales 📷 by me

Four goddesses from Roman London. Dating to the 3rd century AD, the sculpture was re-used as building material in the riverside wall at Blackfriars. Now part of the collections at the Museum of London. 📸 My own. #ReliefWednesday #RomanBritain #Archaeology

A few #WindowsOnWednesday remain in ruined #medieval #WallsOnWednesday around Castello Doria, churches and convent above fishing village of Portovenere. Intentionally or not, they frame views of Ligurian coast beyond very nicely. And Lord Byron used to meditate near here.

Cute lil’ guy alert! 🦔 A tiny terracotta aryballos (perfume bottle) in the form of a hedgehog. Used for scented oil about 2,550 years ago. From Naucratis, Egypt. British Museum 📷 by me britishmuseum.org/collection/obj… #Archaeology

Apparently, 75% of Pacific Palisades is gone. The worst wildfire disaster in the history of the state. And the *other* large fire has just wiped out other communities to the north-east. Just incomprehensible. 😞 #lafires

A #Neolithic conch shell horn (charonia nodifera) found in Ösel, Lower Saxony, dating 5300-4900 BC - the oldest known musical instrument in this region. It's an evidence of early contacts with the Mediterranean. The shell was found filled with flint tools in a settlement pit.

Brading Roman Villa is a fascinating historical site, offering a glimpse into Roman life on the Isle of Wight. In the museum you will see mosaic floors, which provide a stunning representation of Roman craftsmanship, as well as a rich collection of archaeological artifacts

Wow, a rare example of a Neolithic axe with its original ash wood handle still preserved! Resembling a modern felling axe, it was probably used to clear forest some 5,200 years ago. From Borum, eastern Jutland, Denmark. Moesgaard Museum. 📷 by me #Archaeology

My dog, Maya, doesn't understand what's going on or why we're not outside, nor where all her doggy and people friends are. She and my other dog, Duke, only feel our anxiety and don't know what to do. The concept of 'go-bag' means nothing to them. 🥺🔥 #lafires
