1/n It is heartening to witness fruition of India’s pioneering efforts in Heeng (asafoetida) cultivation. The first-ever sowing in India took place on October 15, 2020, in Himachal Pradesh, marking the start of a long-term journey with a plant known to flower only after 5 years.

2/n Thanks to ICAR-NBPGR, which facilitated seed import & financial backing from Himachal Pradesh government and CSIR, the initiative gained ground. NBPGR confirmed that Heeng had never been cultivated in India, with no planting material available for over three decades.

4/n Successful flowering & seed set in 2025 marks a major milestone—signifying not only biological success but also India’s move toward self-reliance in a spice once entirely imported. We had privilege of hosting Amitabh Kant in 2022. Thanks Dr. Sanjay kumar for leading.

CSIR, India CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology The inauguration of the biochar & compost booster unit fills my heart with joy. What began in 2018 with a few kilos of biochar shared by KK Singh sir, then the unit in-charge, has now grown into a full-fledged facility, a true testament to hope and hard work. (1/2)

CSIR, India CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology Through the continuous efforts of students and multiple field trials, we soon scaled up. By 2020, tons of compost booster were reaching high-altitude settlements. x.com/CSIR_IHBT/stat… Seeing the journey from a few kilos to a dedicated unit is so heartwarming. (2/2)
