To figure out your HRV, find your pulse in your wrist/neck. Take a deep, slow breath to the count of 4, & a deep, slow breath out to the count of 6. Exhale fully & completely. If you can feel your heart rate slow down slightly with your exhalation, you have good vagal tone.

It could indicate that you might have some arterial stiffness. Or, your head has taken over & is counting beats per minute & is convinced something must be wrong. You are freaking out & your breathing may have trouble overriding this impulse.

When people think about the danger of smoking, they tend to think about lung cancer statistics, but the fact is that smoking cigarettes is not only the most common preventable cause of death on the planet. It’s also a major risk for heart disease.

Are you a woman with high cholesterol? A woman with a healthy hemoglobin A1C level? A woman with borderline blood pressure? This is the perfect time of life to schedule a “well woman” doctor visit (aka annual physical) if it’s been a while. drsuzannesteinbaum.com/blog-/the-most…

Cholesterol is a waxy substance - not inherently “bad.” Your body needs it to build cells and make vitamins. Too much cholesterol can pose a problem. Some oils contain saturated fat that can increase bad cholesterol. heart.org/en/health-topi…

The heart throb that is your cholesterol level may not seem like the first thing on your list of health concerns. High cholesterol is that problem your grandfather has, right? It’s for the steak-and-martini set, isn’t it? Actually, it could be your problem, too.

High cholesterol contributes to a higher risk of heart disease and stroke. It is important to not only know your total cholesterol, but also your LDL, HDL, triglycerides, apolipoprotein B and your Lp(a). Abnormal levels can increase your risk. heart.org/en/health-topi…

With the drop in estrogen that comes with menopause comes a drop in bone density. This is the time to eat well, get enough calcium and vitamin D, and stress your bones just enough to keep them rebuilding—through walking or running and weight training. drsuzannesteinbaum.com/blog-/the-most…

In my women patients, the most common new risk factor I see are lipid abnormalities, or problems with cholesterol. You’re more likely to have too-high cholesterol than you might think. #hearthealth #hearthealthy #foodfortheheart

You need to know your cholesterol number because younger and younger people are finding they have high cholesterol, mostly because of a poor diet but in some cases because of genetics.

Cholesterol can form a deposit on the inside of the arteries. This can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible. If it ruptures and breaks apart, a blood clot forms and blocks one of these narrowed arteries. causing a heart attack or stroke. heart.org/en/health-topi…

Your doctor may tell you to get a mammogram every year, but be honest: Have you done it? Many women admit they ignore those orders and have gone five or more years without a mammogram. This is a serious mistake if you are over 40 years old. drsuzannesteinbaum.com/blog-/the-most…

Ask your doctor to test your cholesterol, because high cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, and everybody knows it, and has known it for decades, and being a young woman does not make you immune.
