The UK is a relatively low tax economy This means the revenue raised by Government as a proportion of GDP has been low historically Less funding raised for infrastructure/healthcare/education etc A thread 🧵

15yrs ago waiting lists were minimal in the NHS If I referred you for an urgent appt you were seen within 2-3 weeks, routine in 2-3months There had been investment in health care over the previous 10yrs Employment was high, national debt had been falling It’s possible again

Tony Blair & business leaders miss the point Healthcare is personal, reactive, relies on nuance, often the unsaid things, a look down, a ā€˜hmm’, a tear, leading a Nurse or Doctor to a diagnosis beyond the presenting symptoms Healthcare is not a product, it’s an art, with artists

There’s an effort to frame this as a basic industrial dispute, when it goes much beyond that. People have asked questions re why the PA situation has inflamed doctors and why it spills into the pay dispute. I want to start with explaining PAs compared to doctors’ training: 1/

THISšŸ‘‡šŸ¼from Dr Steve Taylor & Dr Rachel Clarke šŸ‘šŸ¼šŸ‘ŒšŸ¼šŸ™šŸ¼ #TonyBlair clearly has zero understanding (or interest) in the art & immense skill involved in practicing medicine. & protected by access to private healthcare, the chances of him/his family seeing AI drs & nurses are low. 1/2

It seems The Times and The Sunday Times has changed its headline from the false ā€˜We’ll bring NHS to standstill’ changed to ā€˜We can cause ā€˜terrible disruption’’ Sadly the damage was done & a lot of respect was lost Not everyone reads beyond the headlines & reads the story Truth & facts matter always

This is absolutely true...tech folk vastly oversimplify highly complex situations to suit their software grift of the day. The only people with even less of a clue are politicians (current and former) whose oversimplification of complexity is responsible for most of our problems

Entirely predictable Decisions made out of desperation are rarely long term decisions. We will lose these GPs from the NHS. Their options are awful in it. Getting out is a no-brainer.

How is Department of Health and Social Care’s workforce planning so lamentably dreadful that hundreds of young doctors have no training jobs to go to - & literally face unemployment this summer? No wonder they’re angry & considering striking šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø Surely fixing this is an urgent priority, Wes Streeting?
