It's taken a while, but I'm glad people are finally waking up to the nonsense of working people propping up pensioners who are the group least likely to be in poverty. Meanwhile families and children - who are most likely to be in poverty - get far less help from the state.

It's great when an expert says the unpopular thing you've been saying. The UK needs to reckon with either reducing the personal allowance or raising the basic rate of income tax. The median earner doesn't pay enough tax relative to income - but people don't like hearing it.

A lot of recent legislation has been passed due to vibes and optics, instead of genuine progression and improvement of law. Creating good quality legislation is very hard. I've just accepted that enough of the current calibre just aren't up to it.

Is Starmer anything more than a glorified civil servant? If he doesn't read his speeches, fine. Wouldn't be the first. But a proper politician wouldn't have lacked the savvy to be as unwise as publicly admitting to it.
