South Asian Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies Leadership Meeting on Sri Lanka is underway.

Most of the major humanitarian crises in Asia Pacific are in South Asia. So, plenty to discuss with leaders of Red Cross/Crescent Societies in Sri Lanka this week. Particularly the challenges of leading and sustaining institutions in times of crisis.

Over the last three years, IFRC has supported Sri Lanka Red Cross Society to respond to seven different emergencies - reaching over a million people. Today, we met the Honourable President of Sri Lanka to discuss how a Red Cross law could enable Sri Lanka Red Cross Society to do even more.

Over 12,000 people in Sri Lanka have been affected and more than 3,300 homes devastated as heavy rainfall is causing rivers to overflow. Floodwaters are still dangerously rising, and Sri Lanka Red Cross is urgently evacuating residents and provide critical first aid.

Monsoon rains in Sri Lanka are affecting over 250,000 people and 66,000 families, with fatalities and people still reported missing. People are forced to evacuate and seek refuge in safe locations such as in religious places and public areas. Sri Lanka Red Cross is responding.
