Welcome to the chat! I’m Dr. Dan Zdanowski, Principal at Gates Chili Middle School. Thrilled to co-moderate today’s chat with Dr. VaShawn Smith ΦΒΣ & Salome Thomas-EL, Ed.D as we celebrate the heart of our schools, our TEACHERS! Discussing #TeacherAppreciation & purposeful leadership this evening.

A1: The impact you have on our community is INCREDIBLE. Thank you for always stepping up to lead, educate, and serve. You are true difference makers. I’m lucky to be on your team.

A2: Give teams of educators, community partners, and student groups an authentic stage/forum to plan something to express their gratitude. Tap student leaders to help plan events, gestures, and announcements during teacher appreciation week.

A3: Affirmed. Their work matters. Our students and community need them. They have a say in the direction we are heading collectively as a building and as a team.

Q5. What’s one thing you tried this year that you’ll definitely use again? #PrincipalOfficeHours

A4: People want to know I’m human too. Modeling trust, collegiality, and vulnerability go a long way. They make the “tough” situations and conversations easier in the long run.

A6: Reframing our students’ perspective and experience with our online learning platform. Shift away from compliance-based behaviors and move towards pride and empowerment in growth and achievement.

A7: Building their participation into the events we plan. Honoring and engaging them in communications. Referencing their contributions and accomplishments. Affirming their presence in person.
