To reset the calendar extra days were added to the current year (46 BC) so that everything would be aligned at the start of 45 BC. Thus it was literally the "longest year in history" — 46 BC had 445 days. No wonder it was called "annus confusionis"; the year of confusion.

And its quirks have also survived, whether December being the 12th month rather than the 10th or March being named after Mars, the God of War. The past always influences the present, even invisibly — how we measure time is itself something that has been shaped over millennia.

Two decades ago, researchers started an experiment that would challenge the prevailing scientific understanding of plant communities. While modern agriculture treats diversity as inefficient, the Jena Experiment proved the opposite: complexity is the key to resilience.

Anybody know where I can buy sterling silver earring hooks - the bits that go through your ears? I love my Christmas earrings, but my ears are a right mess if I don’t have silver or gold through them😟

I have just seen a woodpecker on my bird feeder! I have heard them in the trees here but I don’t remember seeing one before today. Unfortunately my attempts at photography through a rainy windscreen were not good….you can see a sort of smudge😂 BirdWatch Ireland Biodiversity Ireland

When we were clearing my mum’s house I grabbed a few of these knives. Made in Sheffield. Probably originally from my grandmother’s house and dating from late 1930s. And never was there a finer device for spreading butter.

The very sight of a dandelion drives most people up the wall 👹 They instantly want to mow, strim, spray or desperately try to dig up the long root 🙄 Can someone please press the reset button.
