#Pandanus kajui (#Pandanaceae) is one of the rare Kenyan endemic species found only in central #Kenya. It occurs in very few number of individuals within its few sub-populations and is currently classified as Endangered according to IUCN Red List #plants #FloraOfTropicalEastAfrica


#Students and young #botanists at EA earlier today during our monthly #plant walks around the National Museums of Kenya compound. They learnt the spot characters for differentiating #Curcubitaceae, #Passifloraceae & #Vitaceae, among other families led by Ken Wambua #Nairobi #Kenya


Another rare #Kenyan #Endemic species not known by many (probably first online field photos). #Loewia tanaensis (#Passifloraceae) grows mainly on riparian Acacia-Commiphora bushland along Tana River. Formerly placed in #Turneraceae #FloraOfTropicalEastAfrica. Photos by Ken Wambua

EA herbarium's Ken Wambua, participating in a botanical exploration with Ahmed Ibrahim Awale & Faisal Jama in various parts of #Somaliland (incl. Daallo Forest, known to be home to strict endemics such as Diplolophium somaliense. This was made possible by Somaliland Biodiversity Foundation.


The EA herbarium is honoured to receive botanical literature from #Somaliland Biodiversity Foundation following recent research collaboration through Ken Wambua Ahmed Ibrahim Awale Faisal Jama. Vol. 3 of the Flora of #Somalia was missing at EA and we're immensely grateful for the gift #Kenya


The EA hosted Prof. Caifei Zhang of Wuhan Botanical Garden for the last 2 months working on the #orchids of #Kenya. We appreciate Caifei Zhang for determining/identifying more than 50 specimens, including a new record for Kenya and 2 potentially new species. #plants #Nairobi

PhD on LSD? Vivian Kathambi is making good progress on the extraction of #ergot #alkaloids from #seeds of East African #Ipomoea, at Kew's Phytochemistry Lab - mentored by Dr Moses Langat. A collaboration between Ghent University, Kew & The East African Herbarium (EA).


Our monthly Plant Walks kick-started today with great attendance by National Museums of Kenya Nature Kenya-Africa staff and other plant enthusiasts, led by Dr. mwachala. This is a great opportunity for learning the different plant families around us.
