Fourteen years ago on September 20th and 21st 2010, Hurricane Igor struck Newfoundland and Labrador. Over 200 mm of rain fell from the Burin to Bonavista Peninsulas while winds toppled trees and damaged buildings on the Avalon Peninsula. #nlstorm

Tropical storm #Helene has formed in the northwestern Caribbean Sea. It is expected to become a significant hurricane and threaten the U.S. Gulf Coast later this week. No direct impacts are expected in Canada at this time however.

There are 3 storms 🌀 on the go currently in the Atlantic: #Kirk #Leslie and #Milton, but for now Canada remains outside of their area of influence. Milton is expected to track well south of our region but we ECCC Canadian Hurricane Centre will provide updates if the scenario changes.

Hurricane 🌀 Milton is forecast to impact Florida Wednesday evening. There are no signs of Milton impacting weather in Canada. Meanwhile, Hurricane Leslie in the middle of the Atlantic is also not expected to affect us.

On this date 70 years ago Hurricane Hazel combined with a non-tropical low and frontal system over southern Ontario leading to epic flash flooding and taking the lives of over 80 people. Over 200 mm of rain fell in the Toronto area. #onstorm

Today marks the end of the official Atlantic hurricane season. Although the 2024 season was very active, only one storm (Ernesto) entered our CHC response zone as a tropical cyclone. The remnants of both Beryl and Debby also resulted in some indirect impacts in Canada.

Conditions in the tropical Atlantic are conducive for another active hurricane season this year with 13 to 19 named storms expected to develop in the entire basin. About 35% of Atlantic tropical cyclones on average enter the ECCC Canadian Hurricane Centre response zone.

Today is the first day of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season and conditions are favourable for another active season this year. Although the majority of tropical cyclone activity occurs in August, September and October, it’s never too early to prepare. ow.ly/rROw50W253s
