Congratulations to our Senior Chamber Choir on their win last night. As we won in 2022, I decided to give them the challenge of two double choir pieces for this competition- and they nailed it! Super proud 🥹

So proud of everyone performing in this concert StAlbansAbbey : the orchestra and choir have worked so hard this term to get the John Rutter Magnificat learnt and it’s been an absolute joy working with them!

My first cohort to go all the way through from Year 7-13! An amazing group of people- I couldn’t be prouder of all you’ve achieved and how you’ve grown in confidence and musicality over the last seven years.

A reminder. The ambition of the National Curriculum isn't simply giving opportunities to play, sing, compose & listen. It's about gradually improving technically, building knowledge of how music works, & becoming more sophisticated expressively from Years 1-9. It's a long game.

If you're planning for the new Year 7 intake in September, are you focusing on the right kind of knowledge? Being unable to verbally declare that 'there are two quavers in a crotchet' and that 'this is called a treble clef' does not define a new pupil's 'musical knowledge'.

All schools (including academies) required to follow the national curriculum - this means ALL schools must teach music. It’s a no-brainer, of course, but worth celebrating nonetheless. schoolsweek.co.uk/labour-educati…

I couldn’t agree more and music is a part of all this. Let’s hope the PM can deliver this for our young. If there are State Schools (my grandson is in one in S London) which properly deliver The Arts, why not all? It’s not even aspirational, it’s surely mandatory.

"We are reviewing the curriculum to put arts and music back at the heart of the national curriculum where it belongs." Lisa Nandy MP We welcome the Culture Secretary's commitment to arts education. Meaningful reform is urgently needed to address and reverse years of decline.
