Waratah Coal’s Galilee Coal Project, formerly known as China First, is a massive thermal coal mine which would destroy sustainable grazing land within the 8,000ha Bimblebox Nature Refuge (Bimblebox NR/The Bimblebox Alliance (TBA)) and generate around 2.9 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. #edo

“Waratah clearly has not given sufficient consideration to the impact this project will have on local farmers and the unique Bimblebox Nature Refuge (Bimblebox NR/The Bimblebox Alliance (TBA)). Those impacts are unacceptable to our client and the community. #edo #environmentaldefendersoffice

“We will argue the Environmental Authority application should be refused on 11 grounds - including that approval would cause environmental harm and would not be consistent with the core objectives of ecologically sustainable development. #edo #environmentaldefendersoffice

“We will also argue that the Mining Lease application should be refused on 12 grounds, including that there will be significant adverse environmental, social and economic impacts caused by this project and its operations. #edo #environmentaldefendersoffice

The Federal Court has ordered a Commonwealth Government decision over a controversial helicopter tourism project at Halls Island be scrapped and remade after a successful legal challenge by EDO and our client Wilderness Society. #edo #environmentaldefendersoffice

The project, which would see up to 240 helicopter flights a year to and from a private accommodation complex in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park, was deemed by the Commonwealth Government not to require an approval under EPBC Act. We challenged that on behalf of our client.

Last month the Federal Court found this decision was flawed, and now have ordered the Government to remake its decision. #edo #environmentaldefendersoffice
