Celia Richardson Interesting passage from the novel Mary Barton (1848), by Elizabeth Gaskell, describing the love of nature among working class Mancunians of that time. It was in relation to this passage that Gaskell introduced Job Leigh , the grandfather of Mary's friend, Margaret. He was a typical example of the "working class botanists"

What are the most underrated novels of the 19th and 20th centuries? Ones that are not on most people's radars. Making a big list...

Johanna Thomas-Corr Well, it's on people's radar, obviously, but The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is one of the best books of the century. It's always losing out to Jane Eyre (also great). When I teach my Brontes course, students read Tenant & they're like, "Why did no one ever tell us about this book"

#otd 1865 Elizabeth Gaskell, great friend and biographer of Charlotte Bronte, died. She fell dead in mid sentence. Here is Elizabeth's grave in Knutsford and the nearby Gaskell Tower which has the titles of her novels across it.
