I really wish hospitals would stop the “we are very busy so don’t come to A&E unless you have to” public messages. Ineffective. Negative. Gives the illusion of ‘doing something’. Potentially harmful. No evidence.

With The Doctor Magazine, we've spoken about the impact of the social determinants of health in emergency care, and a path to positive change. Not about fixing all the flaws of society, but recognising this is core to Emergency Medicine, and advocating for change.

Dr Cath Aspden presenting at Medics Against Violence conference. Mitigating and responding to the social determinants of health are core business in EM. Emergency Medicine at the Deep End normalising an interest, and working for meaningful intervention.

A week to go until the next meeting of Emergency Medicine at the Deep End. Looking forward to hearing from a range of perspectives, and the usual robust discussion, on a key issue in emergency care.

The 4th meeting of Emergency Medicine at the Deep End starts with a view from the Simon Community Scotland, poorer health outcomes for refugee and migrants, poorer access to care, and a real need to support engagement from EDs to community services.

Great to see this in print and while this isn’t the end of the story it does show the impact that social support in the ED can make. “All’s he ever done was kept his word to me. That’s all it took, was somebody actually keeping your word, believe in you.” Nav patient
