The team at ESA mission control has initiated ESA Gaia's final manoeuvre. The spacecraft is now moving away from the second Lagrange point to prevent it interfering with any current or future missions near this scientifically valuable point in space.

Gaia has used its thrusters for the final time. The spacecraft is now drifting into its retirement orbit around the Sun and the team at ESA mission control have begun switching off its final systems to ensure that it will not reboot again in the future.

Names of all contributors are now being written to the Gaia onboard memory space as a commemoration of their work on the Gaia mission.

The Gaia spacecraft is now successfully passivated. Sharly, the girl from the fairing logo waves Gaia a final goodbye. She also sent her farewell to Gaia: "I waved while you soared up into the sky, now I wave you a proper goodbye." youtube.com/shorts/UmuvxKX…

While our spacecraft is enjoying its retirement, our #GaiaDPAC colleagues are busy working on the upcoming data releases. A first update has been published on the #GaiaDR4 contents! This will be a huge release! Check it out here: cosmos.esa.int/web/gaia/dr4

#GaiaScience update! Gaia found many star families but now spotted a family like no other: Ophion. The group of >1000 young stars behaves oddly, with stars rushing out across our galaxy in a totally haphazard, uncoordinated way... Why? It's a mystery... esa.int/Science_Explor…

Hubble & Gaia can reveal mysteries never seen before when joining forces... the subtle motion of a magnetar was revealed as it inched across the sky, allowing to investigate the magnetar's birthplace. It was not born in a neighbouring supernova after all! esa.int/Science_Explor…

Find Gaia's newest list of the fastest stars across the sky based on #GaiaDR3: cosmos.esa.int/web/gaia/iow_2… The fastest one? Barnard's star! A small red dwarf star in the constellation of Ophiuchus.

Though Gaia observed the sky for 10,5 years, results so far are based on 3 years of data. #GaiaDR4 (5,5 years of data) and #GaiaDR5 (10,5 years of data) are yet to come. Still, Gaia has already rewritten the story of our Milky Way! esa.int/ESA_Multimedia… youtu.be/LrV7xeAM7bg

To collide or not to collide... Will the Milky Way collide with the Andromeda galaxy in about 4.5 billion years? Turns out there's only a 50-50 chance. esa.int/Science_Explor…

🌟 A lonely star, no more The star MP Mus was once thought to be planet-free. But ALMA revealed hidden rings in its disc & ESA's Gaia spotted a wobble. Together, they point to a possible exoplanet. Two telescopes, one beautiful discovery 👉 esa.int/ESA_Multimedia… 🔭 ESO
