Congratulations to Laura Summerauer who just successfully defended her PhD thesis! The thesis examines the effect of #deforestation on #soil redistribution and soil #degradation on #croplands along the steep topography of the East African Rift system.

🚨 🌡️August will be the warmest month ever recorded in Longyearbyen (Svalbard) at 78°N in the Arctic, reaching an average temperature of 11°C (+-0.1°C). This surpasses even July's records by a large margin, while July is historically the warmest month. Uncharted territory.

Master‘s student Ralph Holmann is applying the #HeldeyP fractionation and is sequentially isolating phosphate in different crystal forms to investigate its O isotopes from soils of #Svalbard. These analyses will hopefully help us better understand #arctic soil P cycling.

Introducing our #SoilMonoliths focused on #SoilErosion in our #SoilProfileCollection! Only 30 cm of soil is left on the eroded slope, fertile topsoil settled in the valley. This stark contrast shows how centuries of farming shaped these #soils! #SoilEducation #Agriculture ETH Zürich
