#HurricaneHelene’s deadly rainfall & wind, which created a trail of destruction across 500 miles of the US Southeast in late September, was increased by #ClimateChange📈 Our new study urges inland US regions to plan for ‘unimaginable’ hurricane floods 🧵 ow.ly/4u0B50THzW8

At 8:30pm EDT Wednesday, #Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, FL as a Cat 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120mph. Throughout its track, Milton was fueled by above-average, hot ocean temperatures made as much as 400-800x more likely due to climate change.

Climate change caused nearly half of the damage inflicted by hurricanes Milton and Helene in Florida. New Grantham Institute Imperial research shows that a Category 3 hurricane like Milton would make landfall as a Category 2 - if it wasn’t for human-caused warming. imperial.ac.uk/news/257054/cl…

Some of the limits to #Climate adaptation are already being experienced & we will increasingly reach others in the future if emissions reductions & adaptation efforts are not delivered. Read our new briefing ahead of #COP29: ow.ly/VCNx50TPSep
