2025 growing season: corn update. Alabama Extension

How are #soybeans doing in your neck of the woods? #ScienceForSuccess team member Eros Francisco wants to know! Check out this video with an update on soybean planting in Alabama.

Proper identification of nutrient deficiencies in soybeans is critical for in-season corrections and long-term yield protection. Eros Francisco explains key symptoms and diagnostic rules in this video. Watch here: ow.ly/Xw3V50VOG7p

Deer depredation to row crops is a #1 problem in many areas of the state. We’re researching options of deer repellents to prevent damage to crops and help farmers to succeed in their business. Thanks to Alfa Farmers W&FG for funding this project. Alabama Extension CSES Auburn University

Corn fields in North AL are presenting this problem. Holcus leaf spot caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae results in small, round to oval spots on leaves. Wet and mild weather conditions are in favor of this. Fortunately, it has no impact on yield. Alabama Extension CSES Auburn University

Holcus leaf spot, a bacterial disease of corn. Symptoms appear as small round spots on leaves, about 1/4 in in dia; light tan color often w/t a brown/reddish border. Spots 1st appear on lower leaves after warm wet weather. Not economically important #Corn Eros Francisco Crop Protection Network

Nitrogen deficiency in corn: yellowing of older leaves (typical V shape) and stunting of plants (limited growth). Stay tuned for more agronomic tips. Alabama Extension CSES Auburn University

Soybean field in Central AL showing bacterial blight symptoms. Disease caused by Pseudomonas savastanoi begin with angular lesions (small yellow to brown spots) that progress to dark center and yellowish halo. Fungicides are not a good option of control. Alabama Extension CSES Auburn University

Be careful when applying liquid N fertilizers to corn. It has the potential to cause phytotoxic symptoms of leaf burn, necrosis, loss of leaves and plant stunting. Depends on the severity of injury, the effects may be visible for weeks after application. Alabama Extension CSES Auburn University
