High beta diversity may result from ecological drift and environmental heterogeneity, only drift is related to community size. High beta diversity among islands in the Thousand Island Lake likely due to environmental heterogeneity @Goldblues2000 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

Many theories explain diversity patterns on islands and habitat fragments: e.g. island biogeography, habitat amount hypothesis, habitat diversity hypothesis. Such interpretations may be more complementary than widely thought Zachary G. MacDonald UAlberta ACE Lab onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

NEW PAPER: from a summer packed with island biodiversity surveys with Ira, to the plethora of analyses included within the paper, to the philosophical banter that followed, this ongoing project has been a real pleasure!

New paper! On the perceptual and conceptual apparatuses of butterflies. Perceptual Range, Targeting Ability, and Visual Habitat Detection by Greater Fritillary Butterflies Speyeria cybele (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) and Speyeria atlantis academic.oup.com/jinsectscience…

@wthogmartin Watch where you're going! Zachary G. MacDonald et al tested if fritillary butterflies used vision to navigate between patches. They do! They found no specific distance threshold for perceptual range. 🦋 #LitScanDay bit.ly/2OFta6Q

Stoked to provide a cover photo for this year’s ACA #biodiversity grants report, featuring the Badlands Old World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon dodi), a #butterfly we are studying in southern #Alberta

Exited to contribute to the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) 2020 State of the Mountains Report, wherein Felix Sperling, Bill Sperling, and I write about how Canadian alpine butterflies deserve better monitoring! l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%…

Despite the specific habitat associations of many butterfly species, variation in environmental conditions may be more important to genetic divergence than configurations of suitable habitat UAlberta ACE Lab Zachary G. MacDonald Link to study → buff.ly/3leNs6U

Our paper on landscape #genetics of a swallowtail #butterfly is finally out! It was such a pleasure to become well acquainted with #badlands landscapes and the #ecology and #evolution of this wonderful species UAlberta ACE Lab UofA Field Research onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.111…

It's not particularly hard to figure out where a #GrizzlyBear dens. They walk straight up the mountain and spend a pile of time in some tiny location in a high elevation basin. #Insight #telemetry #GPS #wherethewildthingsare

I do believe binocular disparity to be quite common in inverts, especially those that are predatory! nature.com/articles/30282… x.com/UA_ACELab/stat…

#polarbears now spread out over much of Hudson Bay. Always amazing to ponder migration in such a habitat (drifting habitat with no landmarks) yet the bears home back to the same locations both on the ice and on land in summer.
