Biochar and lump charcoal may look similar—both are black, carbon-rich materials produced by burning wood—but they serve different purposes and are made differently. This week we’ll cover the differences but can you ID which is biochar and which is charcoal? Post guesses below.

The first difference between biochar and charcoal is its purpose. Biochar is a soil amendment used to improve soil health, increase water retention, and support microbial life. Lump charcoal is fuel used for cooking. hubs.li/Q03xvQkF0

The next difference between biochar & charcoal is how it’s made. Biochar is produced via pyrolysis, where biomass is heated in a low-oxygen environment between 550-1100°F. Charcoal is made by burning wood in a low-oxygen kiln at temps between 1100-1800°F. hubs.li/Q03xvN--0
