Actually, Americans voted for lower prices after years of inflation. Tariffs jack up prices furtherโ€”as the President understands based on his demand that Walmart shoulders the cost of the tariffs rather that hike prices. So thatโ€™s the opposite of what they voted for.

If you donโ€™t like the old word you can just say import taxes. Just like we have income taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, gas taxes, and other taxes, we also have import taxes.

Tariffs will... Solve illegal immigration, rid us of fentanyl, secure national defense, create manufacturing jobs, generate tax revenue (to fund childcare/cut the deficit/pay for tax cuts/replace income tax), eliminate trade deficits, create leverage for trade deals and now ALLOW

Folks, the U.S.-UK trade deal is shaping up to be really bad for Americans, starting with tariffs and quotas on motor vehicles. Surprise! People who have followed trade policy will remember how hard the United States worked to get rid of import quotas.

We just updated our tariff paper. We now assign products to precise HS-10 codesโ€”replacing the older COICOP-HS mappingโ€”and extend the price data through June 12. Imported prices are up ~3% since early March, a modest increase given the scale of announced tariffs. Most of the

Retail sales fall 0.9% MM. In inflation-adjusted terms (deflated by CPI commodities), real retail sales fell by 0.8%. Big drivers in the nominal decline were gas stations, groceries, building material stores, and auto dealers.

Bit of a furrowed brow as I update this chart to include this morning's (disappointing) industrial production numbers. While retail sales isn't shown on this chart, it's also an important indicator, and this morning's print (for May) was also disappointing. Watch this space.

Trump's policies are simultaneously: 1. Raising financing costs (higher national debt) 2. Raising building material costs (tariffs) 3. Raising construction labor costs (worksite raids) Naturally, housing starts are going to go down and scarcity gets worse.

Powell finally speaks directly: "we expect a meaningful amount of inflation to arrive in coming months, and we have to take that into account." In English: Rates are higher than they need to be because of tariffs.
