Thankful to all our nation's veterans today for their service in defense of freedom. Thinking of one in particular, though. My father John Patrick "Jack" Gillespie, in the photo below. Over the next few tweets, I want to share the story behind that photo.

That's my oldest brother Dennis, then a commander in the U.S.C.G. reserves, pinning a Silver Star on our father shortly after his 70th birthday about 27 years ago. He had earned the medal more than 40 years earlier in the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest, but had never received it.

Nor the Purple Heart, nor Bronze Star that he had earned as an infantry platoon leader. And never bothered to ask for them after he left the army.

With help from his then Congressman James Saxton and then Senator Bob Dole, we were able to track down his records and get him his medals. He was completely surprised as each of the medals was presented to him, culminating with ...

...Dennis coming out our kitchen door in full dress uniform to present him with the Silver Star. Even in the midst of all that emotion, he instinctively raised his hand in salute as the medal was pinned onto his sweater (which is a breach of protocol, but we felt forgivable)...

Jack Gillespie was born in Donegal, Ireland, but he died a great American. We are proud of his service, and thankful for all those who have served today.

We still have the medals, and display them in a place of honor in his memory
