Bill Russell, RIP, played a key role in civil rights and U.S. sports law. The 1st time "name, image & likeness" appeared in a sports case was in 1986, Kenyatta Corp. v. IRS, involving Russell using a company for NIL. In 2011, Russell joined Ed O'Bannon in defeating NCAA over NIL.





6. O’Bannon vs the NCAA was crucial bc the concept of the NCAA monetizing the NIL of college athletes without their permission and compensation went unchallenged until Ed O'Bannon fmr college POY courageously put his name on landmark case—and the rest is history. At UCLA Law ⤵️
