“Alcohol is already embedded in so many aspects of our lives so instead of making it more available, Scottish Government and sports bodies should be looking at what they can do to promote healthy, family friendly environments for sport.” - Dr Alastair MacGilchrist dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-…

Not only that, but longer term public health impacts should be taken into account. It’s not just about managing safety on match day.

You can read more about alcohol’s contribution to climate change in Dr Megan Cook and Professor Sarah MacLean (et al)'s commentary, published last year in Health Promotion International (open access). doi.org/10.1093/heapro…

Ruaraidh Gilmour considers challenges faced by the Scottish Government & action it should take according to the NCD Alliance Scotland. It quotes SHAAP Chair Alastair MacGilchrist on PHS liver disease report which aims to “underline the severity of the public health emergency from alcohol".

1/2 Everyone at SHAAP is deeply saddened to hear of Christina McKelvie’s passing. As the Minister for Drug and Alcohol Policy, Christina was passionate about reducing alcohol harms in Scotland and advocated for better prevention and support... heraldscotland.com/news/25041692.…

Great article that outlines the extent of the missed opportunity that is alcohol treatment in prisons. Bit of a shame that the Scot Gov response is to focus on their work to tackle drug harms - welcome but also irrelevant to people with alcohol problems.

Disappointing to see The SNP calling for an alcohol tax increase to be scrapped. 1,277 people died from alcohol in 2023. We need an emergency response to reduce alcohol harms in Scotland rather than focusing on boosting industry profits. thenational.scot/news/25067807.…

Important message to all policy makers (inc manifesto writers…) here: don’t be hoodwinked by misleading and cherry picked claims by the alcohol industry. The industry is not part of the solution to Scotland’s alcohol problem, it is the problem.
