#OnThisDay 201 years ago, the great fire of Edinburgh started from an engravers' workshop on Old Assembly Close. It lasted five days and destroyed almost every building on the south side of the High Street, to Parliament Square and most properties toward the Cowgate.

Great news from St Mary’s Street! One of our Conservation Funding Projects is officially underway. The scaffolding is now up, and the contractor will begin carefully descaling the existing stone, removing defective pointing, and repointing with traditional lime-based mortar.

Thomas Henderson, the first Astronomer Royal for Scotland, died #OnThisDay in Edinburgh. He was appointed Astronomer Royal while working in Edinburgh’s City Observatory on Calton Hill – a building which we helped support with our Conservation Funding Programme.
