1/4 Neighbourhood deprivation from birth to late adulthood was assessed for a group of older adults living in #Edinburgh . #MRI scans at age 72 provided information about 🧠morphology.

2/4 We found that people living in disadvantaged areas between the ages of 40 and 69 had smaller total brain and grey matter volumes and thinner cortices, especially in regions associated with cognition and early dementia.

3/4 Additionally, there was evidence of deteriorating white matter tracts, which connect different parts of the brain and are responsible for neural communication.

4/4 Among older adults from lower social classes, the impact of neighbourhood deprivation was much stronger and likely accumulated across the entire life course.
