This is Ulrica — the oldest female alive in the Amboseli elephant population today. Born in 1963, Ulrica is the wise matriarch of the UA2 family. She was recently seen by our field team, she is a true testament to resilience and strength, looking great at 62!

Oleg, born in 2011 to Orna from the OB family. He has two siblings - Oswine (2015) and Oltepesi (2021). Our team tracks elephant families updating IDs, and maintaining a vital database. This research is key to protecting Amboseli’s elephants for generations to come.

Last month, we sent 20 Amboseli community members to Save The Elephants’ HECx Toolbox Workshop in Tsavo. Over three days, they explored 80+ coexistence strategies to protect farms & strengthen local capacity. This knowledge will help in reducing risk to people & elephants.

We’re testing deterrents to reduce fence-breaking, including WildAid’s "smelly elephant repellent"! This method has shown promise elsewhere, and we’re trialling four variations to see what works in Amboseli. Research = better solutions for coexistence!

April transforms Amboseli! With rains, elephants and other wildlife roam beyond the Park to lush community lands. Though sightings of elephants are lower at this time, dramatic skies and snow-capped Kilimanjaro make it breathtaking!

Craig born in 1972 - the same year our project began- is still going strong over 50 years later. Still seen in musth, he’s a vital part of the population - and a symbol of whats possible when elephants are protected and free to thrive.

One of our favourite moments from the field this month! These young calves from the LB family were having the time of their lives in a muddy wallow—rolling, splashing, and playing together.

Elfrida, born in 1970, is one of Amboseli’s oldest elephants and matriarch of the EA family. Her mother gave birth to rare twins—both survived to adulthood. Decades of research help us track stories like hers and guide science-led elephant conservation.
