Materials with high spin orbit coupling (InAs, HgTe, BiSe..) have a trivial edge mode due to band bending near surface. They can also show topological edge modes under right condition. Mini-gate design can help and give you fully reconfigure-able JJs: arxiv.org/abs/2107.08042
