A very neat demonstration of the impacts of adding holes and grooves to coastal structures. A periwinkle was sheltering in that hole and had grazed itself a halo, opening up "real estate" for other species to move in like the barnacles. #ecoengineering #ecologicalenhancement

Some fun new tech in the lab! @jmadin doing some 3D ceramic printing⁩ - part of our ⁦U.S. National Science Foundation⁩ grant w/ ⁦@maadornelas⁩ looking at flattening of reefs & other habitat engineers & what that means for biodiversity. Excited to get these modules into the water!

Was great to get a lab visit here on Moku o Lo'e from some of our HI legislature reps recently! Rep. Bert Kobayashi and Rep. Lisa Marten (IG: @lisamartenhawaii) did us the honor of taking this photo. Hope they'll come visit again soon! ow.ly/ruKJ50FwiYN

Here's a view into our Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology summer course, "Applying Innovative Technologies In Marine Science", funded by Schmidt Ocean. Such a great group of students & always fun to co-teach with Lars Bejder & Joharnien Madin. Amazing production by delphicinema.com. vimeo.com/605146794

Very cool article showing that ivory hunting has driven fast evolution in elephants, with more tuskless females - and, ultimately, possibly fewer elephants overall..not to mention altered foraging patterns. More un-anticipated human impacts on wildlife. nature.com/articles/d4158…

In the wake of #COP26, a telling infographic of past and present global emissions trajectories. Summary of our progress in solving the climate crisis? "Progress has been too slow...it’s still not enough...But we do see real movement.” ow.ly/4fPY50GGqfZ

Surfing can be a vital outlet for new moms, especially those suffering from postpartum depression. The non-profit called Surfing Moms helps get mothers back in the water to improve their overall well-being. Our Jaime Maggio has the story. 5:45pm | Not CBS Los Angeles anymore. 10:45pm | #KCAL9

Great first big conference talk of the PhD by Zack Rago at ICRS 2022 - 15. International Coral Reef Symposium in Bremen, Germany. :) Summary: lots of potential factors may contribute to halos, but mesocosm experiments show predation risk alone can create halo patterns.
