Background: Ella Fitzgerald was born on April 25 1917 in Newport News, Virginia.

Early childhood: Ella and her family worked as a lookout for a brothel. After the death of her mother she moved in with her aunt. She started skipping school so she was sent to a reform but didn't stay there long. By 1934 she was trying to make it out on her own in the streets.

Major contributions and Achievements: She was known for her unique voice and having one of the best selling jazz recordings in history. At the very first Grammy Awards in 1958, Ella picked up her first Grammy and made history as the first African American to win the award.

Impacts: Ella opened opportunities for rising black singers to have a music career without facing racism. She proved that looks or color doesn't matter when it comes to talent.
