2024 #NobelPrize laureate in chemistry David Baker has succeeded with the almost impossible feat of building entirely new kinds of proteins. In recent years, one incredible protein creation after the other has emerged from Baker’s laboratory. They range from new nanomaterials

Congratulations to all - incredibly deserved! It was a total and constant honour working with David. His passion for protein design and its applications, as well as his uncanny attention to detail continue to inspire me. And nothing we do today would be possible without AlphaFold

Big shout out to those researchers who made their data available in PDB over the years The Chemistry Nobel Prize winners today relied on that open academic data to train their models We wouldn't have these advances if researchers hadn't made 200,000 protein structures available

Now that the Nobel prizes for biology, biology, and biology are announced, I can’t wait to see which biologists win for peace and literature!

The Nobel prize website has a pretty well made 1-pager on how Alphafold works

This means the UW Biochemistry department has now cultured two Nobel Prizes (the other being to Edmond Fischer and Ed Krebs in 1992 for reversible protein phosphorylation). I think it speaks to the incredible research and scientific community the UW Biochemistry has! Congrats 🥳
