It's #WorldPenguinDay! These beautiful King penguins may be thriving in the protected waters of #SouthGeorgia but more than half of penguin species are #endangered or at risk in the face of #climatechange and #overfishing (World Wildlife Fund). We cannot lose these incredible birds.

Congratulations to this superstar, the new Dr Kate Laxton! It's been a pleasure and a privilege to work with Kate on #OlDoinyoLengai and I was extremely proud to see her out of her #PhD viva today. A huge thank you also to David Pyle and Hilary Downes for examining her thesis!

Turns out 100 km is a really long way. At every checkpoint I promised myself that was far enough but somehow always shuffled out 10 mins later. I had a little cry running over Beachy Head, I was so happy I hadn’t stopped. Amazing to see Adam Cotterill at 72 km! #SouthDownsUltra

🌋 What did drive the recent unrest at #vulcano island? According to this new work in Communications Earth & Environment, heightened sulphur dioxide flux during fall 2021 is sourced by degassing of volatile-rich mafic magma. Well done Sandro Aiuppa 👏🏻 👉🏼 rdcu.be/cYw7C

One advantage of developing a small networked gas monitoring system, was that I could bring it along as a live demo while presenting my poster at #iavcei2023. The CO2 measurements were being sent via satellite to my email, so I thought I'd plot the results😆

Incredibly surreal to have a short article on our recent fieldwork released today in National Geographic. This expedition was 100% a career highlight for me and the experience will stay with me forever. More coverage to come later this year! nationalgeographic.com/magazine/artic… via @NatGeoMag

Our paper on gas emissions from Bagana volcano is out! We present measurements of gas chemistry and SO2 & CO2 fluxes from this remote and little studied volcano. We used drones to carry our sensors into the summit gas plume alongside ground- and satellite-based remote sensing. 1/

We also review our capability (and open challenges) of using drones to reach inaccessible volcanic summits, particularly flying beyond visual line of sight. Our drones flew 8 km laterally and 1800 m vertically to reach their target passing within 50 m of the summit fumaroles. 4/

We discuss monitoring & risk mitigation. At Bagana, community resilience is born of deep knowledge of the volcano and its hazards. Deeply grateful to the Wakovi community for hosting us & sharing their knowledge. Also huge thanks to our partners at Rabaul Volcano Observatory. 5/

Here is a new paper on CO2 emissions from the 2021 eruption of Tajogaite, La Palma, Canary Islands, and implications for CO2 emissions during construction of the archipelago. We found a remarkable 4.5 wt% CO2 in the magma powering the 2021 eruption. link.springer.com/article/10.103…
