The Agency is hosting presentation sessions showcasing the work of the current cohort of interns at the Mombasa Regional Office.

Benson Nzaphila, an intern at the Nuclear Energy & Infrastructure Development Department, makes a presentation on “Enhancing Safety Standards at NPP Facilities: A study on Potential of Advanced Shielding Materials to reduce radiation exposure”.

He recommended the exploration of advanced shielding materials like boron-polymer and nano-enhanced concrete and the expansion of the use of HDC use in medical, research and NPP structures.

Caleb Kundu, a Biochemist and intern at the Nuclear Energy & Infrastructure Development Department makes a presentation on “The role of Renewable and Nuclear Energy Integration in strengthening Kenya’s National Grid”.

The study recommendations included; Investment in energy storage systems, Development of a clear nuclear energy roadmap and to enhance policy and regulations.

The study recommended; Comprehensive environmental assessment to establish baseline studies and continuous monitoring of marine ecosystems, Embracing advanced cooling technologies with state of the art screening to reduce water withdrawal and thermal impacts.

The study also recommended involvement of local stakeholders in monitoring and decision making processes to leverage on traditional knowledge.
