Do you know how to perform CPR? This crucial, life-saving skill can make the difference between life and death in an emergency. There are plenty of online resources available to help you learn. Take the time to learn it, share your knowledge, and act when it matters most.

Dear Patient: Cardiac arrest can happen unexpectedly or as part of the dying process in advanced illness. CPR aims to restore life, but in terminal cases with multiple organ failure, it may only cause suffering. #DearPatientSeries

Dear Patient: Your clinician shares your fears and wants you to get better. They worry about lawsuits, harm, or being discredited if treatment fails. They know you prefer hope over harsh truth. Sometimes, you are the strength they need to open up. #DearPatientSeries

Life support in ICU uses machines & drugs to sustain vital functions—breathing, circulation, toxin removal—when organs like the lungs, heart, or kidneys fail. It’s a bridge to healing, not a cure. #DearPatientSeries ErasmusMD Andrew Emyedu Mary T. Nabukenya

They switched him off” is a painful, misleading phrase. Discontinuing life support isn’t cruelty—it’s a shift from futile suffering to comfort. It’s mercy when machines cause more harm than help. Let’s change the language around dying with dignity. #DearPatientSeries

The brain, heart, lungs, and kidneys are vital organs, working together to sustain life. Dysfunction in one can lead to a chain reaction — timely care is essential. #CriticalCare #DearPatientSeries

In the ICU, the body is already under intense stress — and life-saving tubes and catheters can open doors for infection. That’s why strict infection control, like limited physical contact, is essential to protect your loved one during this critical time. #DearPatientSeries

During critical illness, the body shifts into survival mode — shutting down non-essential functions like skin renewal, hair growth, and fertility. Weight loss, dry skin, darkening, and brittle nails are common. These changes often reverse with recovery. #DearPatientSeries
