NC judge does not grant injunction for Duke/UNC football players seeking additional year of eligibility. NCAA yesterday denied waivers for 3 Duke players. Waiver for UNC’s JJ Jones is pending. Story coming though it may be a bit.

NEWS: Judge Claudia Wilken issued an order related to the House settlement today, giving attorneys 14 days to phase in or/and grandfather in roster limits or she will *deny* the House settlement.

Wow, ignoring the thing the judge asked you to do and hoping she wouldn’t care didn’t turn out to be a great legal strategy. Who could have guessed.

Judge Wilken is also being very clear that she's not messing around with this, setting a case schedule that will push House v. NCAA to trial (where ~$12 billion of potential damages await the NCAA if they lose).

Judge Wilken has issued a quick order inviting the objector attorneys to file a response brief to tonight's House settlement adjustments by Tuesday. (So we won't have a decision until at least a few days after May 16)

EXCLUSIVE: MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred removes Pete Rose, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson from MLB's permanent ineligible list. Rose and Jackson-- baseball's two pariahs, stained by gambling-- now have a clear pathway for consideration for Baseball's Hall of Fame. Story TK

Very interesting. FIBA has proposed to the NCAA that player movement from FIBA clubs to NCAA teams be treated the same as transfers between FIBA clubs. Would ensure player buyouts in FIBA club contracts are paid. Essentially treats the NCAA as another pro league.

You can call this new position whatever you want. But if a collection of colleges that have market power grant a single person authority to make collective decisions on their behalf, absent collective bargaining their title should be #CAV. That is as in Chief Antitrust Violator.

Another eligiblity lawsuit has been filed against the NCAA, this time by Tennessee basketball's Zakai Zeigler. This is something of a twist from the formula: Zeigler, who has played at UT since his true freshman year in 2021, seeks a fifth year within his eligibility window.

Pretty big college athletics moment below. Tennessee’s Chancellor and AD both publicly state that collective bargaining is the only solution for college athletics moving forward. Many others in college athletics privately agree.

Texas’ pending NIL bill that allows schools to pay NIL compensation to college athletes will now go into effect immediately if/when signed by the governor. The bill also has a unique provision that ties Texas law to future governing body rule changes or court orders on NIL.
