Only an hour before our highly anticipated webinar! looking forward to seeing you there! AfriPopGen

Pain in sickle cell disease is poorly understood and patients face both medical and socioeconomic problems when seeking delivery from discomfort. Bianca Nogrady is not here any more. #SickleCellAwarenessMonth #SickleCell nature.com/articles/d4158âŠ

Looking forward to listening to Prof Carina Schlebusch Carina Schlebusch @cschlebu.bsky.social (from Uppsala University)'s talk on the genetic history of Africans based on modern and ancient DNA at the #ICHG2023 #ComingHome UCT Postgrad Studies UCT Kgethi Phakeng, PhD(Wits); Hon DSc (UBristol) Southern African society for Human GeneticsâSASHG ASHG European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG)

Todayâs #NobelPrize winner Svante PÀÀbo is a true authority on the study of ancient DNA. He was the first to successfully clone DNA from a mummy, and in 2009, he completed sequencing of the Neanderthal genome (in collaboration with Jim Mullikin National Human Genome Research Institute!).

Congrats to Svante and the entire MPI-EVA Leipzig genetics department past and present! It's not just the Neanderthals. So much of the current paradigm of ancient DNA retrievalâ âthe nitty grittyâ âbears the mark of Svante's sense of scientific rigour.
